How Does Satellite TV Work?
How
Satellite TV Works
For years we
have had three means of receiving a television signal. We’ve
had cable, antenna, and satellite TV. Satellite TV is bounced
off a satellite so that the homeowners around the world with a
satellite dish are able to receive the signal.
In order to
have satellite TV you have to have a satellite dish and a
receiver. The satellite dish sits outside somewhere on your
house to receive the transmissions and then transfers them to
the receiver, which then sends them to the television. These
signals the television receives are considered digital and if
you have a newer TV you will be getting your signal in HDTV.
There are two
major providers for satellite TV, Dish Network and DirecTV.
Each provider has the equipment you can purchase to receive the
satellite signal. They also have packages that you are able to
purchase. The provider allows the signals to be received at
your home and therefore they control, which channels you view.
You have to pay a certain amount each month these providers in
order to receive a signal. If you pay for all the sports
channels, movie channels, and all other television channels out
there than the company will not block the channels, however if
you only pay for HBO and the basic channels you will only
receive those channels.
The satellite
company controls the signals you receive just like a cable
company. The difference with satellite TV is that you can
actually set it up yourself. You need to find a place that is
unobstructed outside your home so the satellite dish can receive
a clear signal and then plug the receiver in to the wall and
TV. Once you have all the equipment stationed you may need one
person fixing the satellite dish until the receiver sees the
signal from the satellite provider. This can take a few minutes
and you will need to speak with a representative from the
satellite company to sign up for service before you search for a
signal.
Satellite TV
receives a signal even when the weather is bad. Occasionally
you may have interference such as the wind knocking the signal
or snow of the dish can obstruct the signal, but these issues
can be easily solved. With the wind you just have to wait for
it to die down and with the snow you can just go out and brush
the dish off. It takes a considerable amount of interference
for you to loose the signal completely.
Satellite TV in
the USA works just like any other satellite dish. It has to
have a satellite dish to receive the signal and then a receiver
to decode the transmission on to your TV. The quality of
satellite TV is often better than digital cable for the pure
fact that you are working of the direct signal rather than
taking a long piece of cable and bringing it into your home.
Remember there are two service providers that you can check out
before making a decision.
