HDTV - High Definition Television

With the new technology spinning out of factories everyday it is a wonder we can keep up with the new terms and understand the information provided.  When HDTV first hit the market most people were wondering what it was and why they may want to have it in their homes.  It takes a little more than the company providing the signal for HDTV.

HDTV is high definition television.  This means the signal you receive from DirecTV or Dish Network is providing you with a digital transmission for your television to decode.  High definition television improves the quality of signal you receive by the speed and resolution.  The downside is the television itself.  If you have an older TV that does not have a card to decode the HDTV signal you will not receive the information in the quality those with a newer TV have.

Your television has to be set up to receive the signal otherwise the programs that tout HDTV are not providing you with that signal.  Televisions like the plasma or LCD screen are set up to receive these signals.

When you talk about HDTV in relation to satellite television you should know a few things.  DirecTV HDTV is provided through the satellite dish to the receiver and decoded along the coaxial cable to your television.  Again in order to receive the signal you do have to have the correct television, but unlike cable, satellite TV is always a digital signal.  Even Dish Network HDTV has a digital signal to help you receive HDTV.

The resolution of HDTV is normally 1280x720 pixels.  When talking about pixels we mean the amount of tiny pieces that create the whole picture.  Think about photography you see the photo as a whole picture, but it has pixels.  If you enlarge the picture you will see the pixels that actually makes up the print.  It is the same with high definition television.  The pixels are the picture the television is receiving from your satellite service provider.  All satellite receivers built in the last ten years come with the HDTV built in.  If you have a receiver that is around 1990 chances are it does not have HDTV capabilities if the receiver is still working.

When you upgrade you television you will also want to upgrade your satellite equipment.  The satellite companies are improving technology just like the rest of the world.  Older versions of DirecTV don’t allow you to watch a program while you are searching for something new to watch.  Now the new receivers are allowing you a picture in the corner while you search for shows you might want to watch.  The technology is improving so you can record programs with a DVR and still watch a program.

HDTV is just a small part of the technology provided.  As television watchers we all wan to have the clearest picture that can be provided and why not?  We spend quite a lot of time in front of the television and the technology is out there for us to use.

To view HDTV you need three things:

A source that provides a signal in HDTV.

A High Definition TV.

An Antenna to receive the signal.
